Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

09 June 2003

Many of you may not be aware of the many easy ways we can be both ecologically sensitive and generous to those in need. Recycling helps us preserve natural resources and reduces the amount of waste going into our landfills. In addition, donating useful items through charitable organizations helps others AND reduces landfill waste.

Please note that due to extraordinary cost increases in the County's recycling program, the curbside "blue bag" program will be discontinued beginning July 1, 2003, until a more cost effective method of recycling can be found. Residents are strongly encouraged to continue recycling glass, plastic, and aluminum/steel items at the McIntire Road Recycling Center on McInitire Road. For more information, please contact the County's Department of Engineering and Public Works at 434-296-5861.

Every Monday you can place certain items beside your trashcan, and they will be picked up.
Place these items in a paper grocery bag:

  • Newspapers - clean and dry, including all the inserts that came with them. You can double-bag during wet weather.
  • Magazines and Catalogs - but no telephone books or cardboard.
In addition to curbside recycling, the McIntire Road Recycling Center, located north of the County Office Building, accepts four categories of paper, three categories of glass bottles and jars, metal food/beverage cans, and plastic. The center is open every day of the week. Load up your car, and bring these items to the recycling center on McIntire Road:
  • Corregated Cardboard Boxes - and they don't even have to be flattened!
  • Cereal Boxes - and other cardboard food boxes.
  • Junk Mail - and other paper waste.
  • Telephone books - plus other books, which are placed in a little room at the rear of the center, and are made available to the public for free. You might even find a book there to take home yourself!
Many local service organizations have annual Rummage Sales to raise funds. Every year we have the 2003 SPCA Spring Rummage Sale. The sale is usually held in the former Moore's Lumber building on Rt.250 East at Pantop's (next to Clean Machine Car Wash). They receive tax deductible donations of household goods of all kinds. Keep an eye on the local papers and the Dunlora "Latest News" website for each years dates.
The Charlottesville Salvation Army depends greatly on the revenue provided by its thrift store to run all of its many programs. The Thrift Store accepts donations of a wide variety, including clothing, furniture, electronic equipment, and household items. Please call (434) 979-5230 to arrange for a pick up, or for more information.
There are many other organizations that accept donations at different times of the year. Keep your eyes open for such announcements.

So, the next time you're tempted to just "throw it out", think about recycling and reaching out instead. Take that extra step, even if it seems a bit burdensome, and someone will be glad you did. Each one of our small acts of charity and ecological sensitivity can together make a difference.
